The plaza of Albuquerque’s Old Town was founded in 1706. Its cluster of shops, restaurants, and museums, many of which are housed in historic buildings, is just several minutes’ walk along Old Town Road from the Casitas at Old Town— a compound of 19th century adobe structures which include the owner’s residence and two casitas.
You enter each casita through its own blue painted Peñasco door— blue to scare away evil spirits—where viga ceilings, brick floors, and gleaming white plastered walls create the essence of historic Albuquerque. The private entrances to each suite lead into a combination sitting, dining, and kitchen area. The kitchens include stove, refrigerator, garbage disposal, microwave, and coffee maker as well as the equipment necessary to prepare your own meals.
Each suite, one a queen and the other a double, has its own private bath. Both have radiant heating and air conditioning. The distinctive interiors have traditional furniture and lighting from New Mexico’s past, recreating the world of the artists’ and writers’ colonies of Santa Fe and Taos in the 20s and 30s. In the winter months aromatic piñon fills the air from corner fireplaces which provide a warm glow to your casita while in the summer you can relax under New Mexico’s incomparable blue skies, behind adobe walls on your own private patio landscaped with native southwestern plantings.
The compound itself is isolated from Old Town Road and provides generous off-street parking. In short, the Casitas at Old Town is an escape from the routine, from the harried world, and offers seclusion, privacy, and an ambiance that is truly New Mexican.
